The Second Half-Century
By Greg Arnold

As Tom “Big Al” Schreiter would put it, I’ve been working on my "before picture".  But don’t you think 50 years is long enough!  300 Pounds doesn’t seem to be my optimum fighting weight.  I don’t smoke, I drink very little, but food tastes really good to me.  So I love to eat.  I love to cook too.  In fact, I’m really very good at it.  It probably isn’t a good thing when you love to eat and you love to cook.  I turned 50 in September 2005; I think it would be nice to spend the second half-century in a little more stealthy body.

No I’m not committed to spending 5 hours a day in the gym; although I am walking a couple miles a day.  I think it is important to do what it is you know you will do, forever.  Yes I could join the local gym.  I am sure that I’d even visit and get sweaty for a couple weeks.  But you can bet that on the first available excuse, I’d quit.  I know, I know, you’ve never joined a gym and then quit going, but I’m a weaker sole than you.  A walk a day will do, and it is something I will do.

Ok, what about eating a little less.  Yes that’s probably a good idea.  Maybe I should cut out those 32oz steaks that I like to order in restaurants.  Maybe I could get by on an occasional 12 ouncer; and I don’t have to put a half a pound of butter on my baked potato either.  Yes, cutting back on my calories wouldn’t hurt.  So, I’ll walk more and eat less.  I’m feeling stealthier already.

Someone told me to drink more water too.  I like water, so that didn’t sound bad to me.  I particularly like the water that comes in blue-tinted bottles.  It tastes better than the water than comes in clear bottles.  I was also told that I should drink an ounce of water per day for every 2 pounds of body weight that I carry.  In the blue-tinted bottles, that will only cost me about $18 a day.  My wife, Pattie, came up with a money solution.  She sets out 9 17oz bottles for me in the kitchen every morning.  I know she fills them herself, but she does it in blue-tinted bottles so they taste pretty good.  I don’t go to bed without having drunk my 9 blue-tinted bottles of water.  Of course I visit the bathroom pretty regularly too.

I read labels now also.  I learned something that I thought was pretty interesting.  I found out that “high fructose corn syrup” tells your body when consumed to store it as fat.  It also shuts off the mechanism that tells you when you're full.  I also found out that it is in almost every processed food.  It is used as a low cost sugar substitute, so virtually all regular sodas have “HFCS” as their sweetener.  They started using it instead of sugar about 15 years ago.  Remember when 16-ounce sodas made you feel full?  Now we buy colas in speedy-marts in half-gallon glasses.  Then we go back for more, later.

HFCS/corn syrup is also used as a fat substitute because it tastes good; and so does fat!  The food manufacturers started using corn syrup when they started making low-fat and non-fat foods because we all wanted that to lose weight.  The result is we have gone from a nation where 58% of us are over-weight, to 62%!  Corn syrup is in breads, sauces, salad dressings, and lots of other stuff.  Heck, I noticed “fat-free” half and half the other day.  My first though was “cool!”  My second thought was read the label before you buy.  Yup, you guessed it; “High Fructose Corn Syrup.”   So…..never buy anything before you read the label, and never buy anything with "high fructose corn syrup"/"HFCS"/"corn syrup" as an ingredient.

Now to the MLM-related part of this article; the healthier you look, the more likely it is people will join your opportunity.  You may not like it, but it is true.  Also, the longer you live, the more money you have the opportunity to make.  Unless you’re Elvis, you probably won’t make millions after you’re dead.  One other item: If your company makes weight-loss products, you should probably be your own customer too.  My company has a few products of that nature so I’m a customer too.

So here is my simple formula for the 62% of us that participate in network marketing that want to look like the other 38%:

  1. Walk a mile or two a day.
  2. Cut down on your calories.  Don’t eat 32oz steaks.
  3. Set out blue-tinted water bottles each morning and drink the right amount of water EVERY DAY.
  4. Never buy anything before you read the label, and never buy anything with high fructose corn syrup/HFCS/corn syrup as an ingredient.
  5. Use your company’s weight-loss products.
  6. Live longer, make more money.
  7. Don’t worry, be happy!

By the way, I hit 289 pounds today, down from about 330.  On my journey of gaining weight over the years I can pretty much tell you what I weighed in any particular year.  289 Takes me back to 1997.  My expectation is to settle in at about 1980 over the next several months.  That would put me at about 215 pounds, which is just about right.  I see many of you at various industry events, please don’t hesitate to say hello and ask me what year I’m in now.
