What's really next?  Does MLM allow you to take advantage of the trends or is it the same stuff with different packaging?

I recently read a book that was recommended by friend, Mitch Axelrod, called The Long Tail, Why The Future Of Business Is Selling Less Of More by Wired Magazine's Chris Anderson.  In it Mr. Anderson describes a phenomenon he calls "The Long Tail."   

Here are a couple examples:

Rhapsody.com a download music seller.  Rhapsody has millions of music titles.  Most are pretty obscure songs at best. A huge music store might carry 10,000 titles at best.  Interesting enough though, 98% of their titles sell at least once every quarter.  Amazon.com a book seller, has millions of titles, including The Multi-Level Mangler In King Arthur's Court.  A huge bookstore wouldn't carry any where near that many titles.  Yet These two online marketers take full advantage of The Long Tail.

So what's a long tail?

If you looked at Rhapsody's sales graph, you would see that they sell millions of their most popular 100 or 200 songs each month.  Then you would see those sales drop off dramatically with the other titles they sell.  But not to zero, not for a very long time through a very long list of titles.  This creates The Long Tail.

Why Is It A Big Deal? 

That long tail represents 40% of Rhapsody's sales each month.  Sales that no brick and mortar music store could ever generate.  For it to be worth inventorying in a brick and mortar business each title would have to generate $5 in sales each month.  For Rhapsody, each title simply represents only a few bits of server space.  NO INVENTORY COSTS!  This innovation can be a very big deal for enterprising entrepreneurs!

How Come?

The Internet generation and choices, lots of choices.  When I grew up, other than prime-time television we had choices of Gilligan's Island reruns or Star Trek reruns.  In music, we had the top 40.  Today, kids can choose from millions of music titles through sites like Rhapsody and iTunes.  TV and even cable have been replaced by YouTube and a variety of other internet based entertainment.  The next generation of millionaires and multi-millionaires will be Internet and technology junkies.  Or those who find out how to take advantage of it and ride the next wave.

It's About Distribution Stupid

The advisor who got President Clinton elected coined the phrase; It's about the economy, stupid.  That prophetic and powerful approach got a little known nobody from Arkansas elected to the highest office over a President who was sitting at the time of the fall of communism and a war we won in the gulf.  You aren't supposed to win against administrations with that kind of notoriety!

For years companies have opened and failed thinking the Wal*Mart business model was about low prices.  I have talked to so many new MLM company owners who have told me that they were going to be the Wal*Mart of the MLM industry.  They simply didn't have a clue.  They have always paid with their company's lives too.  Wal*Mart doesn't  have low prices because they have stripped all their profits away, they have low prices because they have stripped their distribution costs to the bone. 

The Long Tail is all about reducing the cost of inventory and distribution to almost nothing!  Internet downloads of MLM books and audio training will present a very exciting opportunity indeed for those that take advantage.
